Llama la atención a primera vista por su ubicación orientada hacia una de las zonas más concurridas de la ciudad. En “Realegalidad na Peinha” se pretende aprovechar estas características estructurales, para convertir algunos de sus muros en lienzos para sus habitantes. El trabajo comenzó con reflexiones sobre el arte y la expresión artística urbana con jóvenes de entre 13 y 18 años. Después, pasamos a la acción trabajando en murales a gran escala en los espacios más visibles de la favela. Partíamos de fotos que los mismos chicos del grupo habían sacado durante los días anteriores. The inside was covered in large blankets, each one with a different print. In one of the corners was the kitchen, which was basically a portable camping stove.On one of the walls was a big Spanish flag with the “Osborne” bull in the middle (weird patriotism for a gipsy Romanian community) and of course they had a TV on top of the fridge. But what was more surprising to me was a big electronic piano close to the door. Inside was a woman, pretty, probably much younger than she seemed, with a gold tooth, who was the most fashionable in the neigh- borhood. Her hair was worn up and she was wearing a pink suit and a long skirt. Licenciada en Bellas Artes por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, con un máster en Cooperación Internacional y Desarrollo, la artista siempre ha mostrado una preocupación constante por la vulnerabilidad de la pobreza, los habitantes de las aglomeraciones urbanas, las víctimas de la emigración, las superpoblaciones del Tercer Mundo y su efecto sobre el medio ambiente. La toma de conciencia se produjo en 2009, cuando asistió como activista de Oxfam Intermón a la cumbre internacional sobre cambio climático de Poznan, Polonia, en una experiencia que le abrió los ojos a los principales retos globales de nuestro tiempo. Desde entonces la inquietud sobre las consecuencias de la forma de vida de las sociedades occidentales en el medio ambiente es un asunto recurrente en su trabajo, que la ha llevado desde Asturias a pasar largas estancias en São Paulo, Lisboa, Londres, Yakarta, Pekín, Nueva York o Madrid, lugares todos cuyos suburbios se ha dedicado a explorar. Su activismo, que es también social, se plasma artísticamente en acrílicos sobre lienzo, fotografías transferidas, ensamblajes hechos con materiales reciclados o vídeos en los que recoge sus performances, como la que le hizo recorrer, a ciegas y con tacones, varios kilómetros de la Gran Muralla china para denunciar las barreras y los límites que se imponen a las mujeres. En la exposición que aquí se muestra, y que sirve para celebrar el galardón, el más importante que reciben los artistas jóvenes asturianos, María Peña Coto enfrenta la dialéctica humanidad/naturaleza a través de la máscara, que expresa muchos de los conceptos implícitos en su obra, como los referidos a la identidad y al con icto hombre-animal. El título Personæ, etimológicamente, también hace referencia a la diferenciación de los individuos de la raza humana, singularizándolos frente a la naturaleza, con la chulería propia de los matones de barrio, que hacen huir despavoridos a los animales del entorno, o en su caso reintegrándolos en ella, como el activismo animalista que todavía busca la conexión respetuosa del medio urbano con el natural. La artista ovetense no para quieta, como se ve en los vídeos en los que aparece pintando algunas de las obras de esta exposición, y en su re exionar peripatético busca generar sensación de acción y movimiento, para integrar al espectador e incitarle a hacerse preguntas. Los personajes de sus cuadros siempre tienen carácter activo, en especial los femeninos, a los que reivindica, ya que a las mujeres siempre se las ha apartado de las grandes decisiones, lo que ha tenido gravísimas consecuencias, incluso en asuntos tan aparentemente ajenos como el cambio climático vinculado a la acción humana. Muchas de sus telas, pintadas e intervenidas, están recompuestas mediante retazos, y en alguna de ellas se busca la participación del público asistente, en una tendencia que María Peña Coto comparte con muchas compañeras de generación. Lo participativo no es tanto una cuestión de método como de estilo y se corresponde adecuadamente con alguien que no es solo buena artista sino mejor persona, con ada en que no sea demasiado tarde para corregir colectivamente un trazado que nos lleva directamente hacia la destrucción. En la celebración del Ogoh Ogoh se sacan a la calle estas grotescas figuras que posteriormente se queman. De este modo se expulsan y libera al pueblo de estos malos espíritus. La celebración forma parte de un conjunto de eventos y ceremonias que despiden el año según el calendario Saka. Cada comunidad se prepara para la exhibición de su Ogoh. El espectáculo nocturno es estremecedor, el Ogoh se hace hueco a empujones entre la masiva multitud apelotonada, acompañado de música y danzas tradicionales. Entra dando vueltas como si estuviera realmente endemoniado. Los portadores corren de un lado a otro empujando a las masas en un espectáculo que entre asusta y divierte a los espectadores. A penas corre el aire. Algunos Ogohs con el frenético movimiento se enganchan con los cables de la electricidad y pierden piezas. Uno se rompe al chocar con un semáforo y se desploma por completo, pero eso no les para. Los agitados movimientos continúan estremeciendo al público que solo responde a los empujones. Esta ceremonia es parte de la celebración de la llegada del nuevo año para los hinduistas de Bali. Cada comunidad se sienta alrededor de su templo. Rezan a sus dioses con las manos juntas sobre la cabeza. El o la líder espiritual (“Pedande”) les rocían con agua bendita. Todo cambió cuando los hombres intentaron construir una torre para llegar hasta el cielo. Dios, ofendido por tanta arrogancia, decidió crear varias lenguas para que no se entendieran, no pudieran construir la torre y tuvieran que encontrar un lenguaje común para el entendimiento.
